Ok, this discussion is fabulous and I have written extensively about it before. In a nutshell, in the US the cost of healthcare is directly related to multiple groups who seek to make a profit. We are not talking about treading water, we are talking about sometimes huge profits. Whether it is pharmaceutical, medical device, insurance, hospitals, doctor groups, equity investment groups… they all drive up the cost. If you go after one group, it will only make a small dent in the problem. In the US unlike Israel, there are too many different opinions on the matter to allow effective change. The conservative mantra of,” I am not paying for someone else’s health care and I am certainly not going to support another government agency to mess things up”, will guarantee grid lock. As rightfully pointed out, for doctors to make any profit, the pay for service model drives up the number of patients seen per day. The more you see, the less time you spend with the patient, the more you rely on expensive testing further driving up the cost. As a result, one drives down quality of care and patient satisfaction. I have noted on doctor social media platforms these issue and how no presidential candidate discussed health care in the recent US election. All we heard about was the boarder, illegal immigrants, fascist tendencies, eating our pets… When I pointed this out, there was consistently radio silence from other doctors. Sad
