It has always amazed me how people of an ethnic/religious group who were discriminated against in the past could jump on the anti-DEI bandwagon. And I have personally known people who are first generation Americans rally against DEI even though they and their parents were viewed with bigotry, distrust, and discriminated against. This speaks to the human nature that once you reach a place in which you feel secure, you do not want anyone else to threaten your security. So, if I am an Eastern European Jew who after2-3 generations in America now feel secure, why would I want to risk that to the new minority. And the answer should be, I am not insecure of my success and in fact I should encourage others to find their success in this country. Sadly, our President and many in the Republican Party used people’s fears and insecurities to promote half truths and gain their vote by playing on these fears. I would say to the anti-DEI person,” think how great this country could have been if the over qualified minority got the job rather than the majority white man.”
DEI is similar to the welfare system in acted in the 60’s. It was meant to help and it was a noble effort. Ultimately, it proved to hinder many and therefore needed tweaking. DEI is a noble cause and means well. It just needs to be tweaked to be helpful and not abandoned as an evil policy.
